Methodology
This page explains how DeskConsensus reaches its recommendations, so you can judge them for yourself.
The short version
We don’t test products ourselves. We analyze specs, independent lab data, expert reviews and, where available, owner feedback, then explain what the combined evidence says. Each guide links back to this method.
Step 1: Define what matters
For each guide we decide what a buyer needs most. That depends on the product: for a headset it might be microphone quality and connector compatibility, for a keyboard it might be typing feel and layout, for a monitor it might be sharpness and ports. We always weigh comfort, reliability and value too.
Step 2: Check the specs
We compare manufacturer specifications and what’s in the box, with special attention to compatibility, such as connector types, supported operating systems and ports. Specs tell us what will work with your setup, and they’re the first filter.
Step 3: Use independent lab data
Where independent labs and established testing outlets publish measurements, we use them and cite the source. Lab results are a controlled snapshot of one sample, so we treat them as one input, not the verdict.
How we weigh sources. We favor outlets that buy their own review units and explain how they test. We note when a reviewer was supplied the product, and we give less weight to reviews that are sponsored or exist mainly to earn affiliate commissions. Where we can’t find independent testing, we say so.
Step 4: Check owner feedback
Where public owner discussions exist, such as forums, we look for patterns rather than single opinions, and pay most attention to problems that repeat, such as parts that fail, features that don’t work as advertised, or fit and comfort issues. Owner feedback can be incomplete or unreliable, so we treat it as one signal alongside specs and expert testing, and we say when the evidence is thin.
Step 5: Reach a conclusion
We combine the three sources. When specs, lab data and owners agree, we’re confident. When they conflict, we say so and explain which we trust and why. The result is a pick for each need, such as best overall, best budget and best for a specific use, along with who should skip it.
Our rules
- We do not run hands-on tests and never claim to.
- We don’t use star ratings or scores.
- We show price bands instead of live prices, because prices change daily.
- Payments or commissions, if we ever earn them, will never influence which product we recommend or how we rank it.
- We update guides when products change, and we note when a guide was last updated.
